India dangles scholarships to Malawian students
India and Malawi are pushing to strengthen diplomatic ties through education, with the India International Education Expo set for Friday in Lilongwe expected to boost cooperation.
Briefing the media ahead of the event, Indian High Commissioner Amararam Gujar said education and capacity building remain central to the two countries’ long-standing relationship.

“India believes in sharing knowledge and expertise with Global South partner countries, including Malawi,” he said, citing the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (Itec) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships as key programmes.
Gujar said about 1 700 Malawian professionals have benefitted from Itec short courses while many others have studied in India under ICCR scholarships.
He added that education also strengthens cultural ties as Malawian graduates often return home with a deeper understanding of Indian values and culture.
Meanwhile, Mtendere Education Consultancy lead consultant Brenda Kumwembe has urged parents and students to attend the expo to engage directly with university representatives and learn more about studying in India.
“The event will give parents and students a chance to interact directly with university representatives, ask questions, and learn more about studying in India. Many people have questions about India and its culture, so I strongly encourage them to attend the expo,” she said.
